Receiving Assistant

Amherst College invites applications for the Receiving Assistant position. The Receiving Assistant is a full time, 42 week per year position, job group and level AO-2. Support the administrative efforts of Dining Services to provide the campus community with excellent service. Receive and maintain storage of all perishable and non-perishable items for all areas of Dining Services. Provide support for the Procurement Supervisor and overall dining program, as well as provide inventories for the purpose of ordering and cost control.
Work schedule may vary dependent upon business levels, but is generally Tuesday - Saturday, 6:30 a.m. until 3:00 p.m.
Takes appropriate actions to support a diverse workforce and participates in the College's efforts to create a respectful, inclusive, and welcoming work environment.
Key Responsibilities

  • Receive all deliveries from vendors, ensure accuracy, proper temperatures, and loss prevention due to damage

  • Organize delivered items into storage, collaborate with the production staff on items which are needed, and assist in finding items in storage areas

  • Enter invoices into the computer, ensuring accuracy and correct pricing

  • Organize and clean all storage areas, walk-ins, freezers, loading dock and recycling areas

  • Deliver products to other dining locations


  • High School diploma or equivalent

  • 6 months to 1 year of related experience

  • Experience with Microsoft Office programs or ability to learn

  • Strong verbal and written communications, interpersonal, customer service skills

  • Strong organizational and time management skills, as well as the ability to multi-task and function efficiently in a fast paced environment

  • Basic mathematics including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division

  • Attention to detail

  • Commitment to or experience working with a diverse community


  • More than 1 year of shipping/receiving experience

  • Data entry experience

  • Experience using a pallet jack and/or cardboard baler

Don't Be Fooled

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
